Just a quick note. After a whirlwind weekend of shopping in Birmingham and Jackson, we are just about done. The trip to Whole Foods was a huge eyeopener and I think will end up saving us a lot of money and making our lives easier... and not in the way you think. :o) More on that tomorrow.
We had an uneventful gluten free meal at Red Robin, Wendy's and PF Chang's. The easiest one was PF Chang's (They have a printed gf menu and a GF button they ring everything in under. It even said "GF XYZ" on the receipt.) but it really wasn't that difficult at any of the places we went.
The funniest was when we went to Wendy's. I asked asked if they had a copy of their gf menu and only they looked at me like I was crazy and asked what gluten was. I gave the quick answer "I have celiac disease which means that I can't ear gluten. Gluten is in wheat so no flour or products containing flour for me." We looked it up online and I ordered a hamburger without a bun. The manager's eyes got huge and she said "You can't have bread??"
**crickets chirping**
One of the employees who was standing there looked at her and said "No. She can't eat bread, or ABC, XYZ..." I am willing to bet she knows someone who is celiac based on what she said.
It was pretty eye opening, though. It made e realize that even if I explain it to the people cooking my food, I am still putting my health into the hands of people who don't understand. A scary thought, indeed.

That "what's gluten?" comment reminds me of the "what's the difference?" when I asked if in bed, bath, and beyond if they had a shower curtain or shower curtain liner that WASN'T made in CHINA...the girl looked at me and was like "what's the difference?" LOL oh boy.....would love a whole foods here.....that would make my day!
